I've spent the last year or so keeping an eye out for a replacement development environment for what is currently an in-house Visual Basic app. I discovered the joy of Python a while back, but had never discovered the 'right' GUI toolkit to go with it, until recently finding that XULRunner with the pyXPCom Extension gives me pretty much everything I could wish for. And like you, once I work out the best way of integrating with a database, I will be a very happy camper.
