MySQL reinforces Oracle's global brand immensly. They've now got two of the worlds biggest repositories of data in their stable, which is huge when you're trying to win the backend repository market.
Great post.
You don't have to be a genius to see that Oracle isn't going to be a great booster of MySQL. What do they have to gain from it? The supported MySQL version gave enterprises a way to use MySQL with enterprise class support. If I were an enterprise trying to make a database decision today and I needed support, the Oracle acquisition would certainly give me pause. Hopefully we will see another company step in and fill the void sooner rather than later. A Such a shame to see a great product like MySQL start sliding down the slippery slope of Oracle profit-glut. Our organisation has been a major backer of MySQL but is now in the process of moving 34 core MySQL databases onto PostgreSQL. A major project but there is absolutely no doubt that MySQL has no future with big red.
