For those of you searching for assistance, in Canada, visit http://www.phonebusters.com. If you're a victim, call their hot line at 1-888-495-8501
I recieved a call today(unknown) and it was a recorded message saying "I have been awarded a vacation to take advantage press 9 " I enter a lot of competitions online so I was curious and I pressed 9, a voice (American accent, I am in the UK) replied and said I have been awarded a vacation at one of their resorts.
I asked the operator how did you get my number and she said that you must have had taken a holiday in the last 2 years to one of their resorts. I haven't been on holiday for 3 YEARS!. I smelt a rat and put the phone down. I gather this is a scam BUT can I be charged a huge amount per min on my phone bill for just replieing by pressing 9 on my kaypad?? As far as I am aware the maximum you can be charged in the UK is £1.50 a min , But this is dialled from abroad and I have heard stories that people have been charged £20 a min for replieing to these calls. Is this true? Have I been conned? If so is there anything I can do? [Ed. Note: Without knowing exactly how your telephone network operates, I think the probability that you have been scammed is fairly low. There seems to be a great deal of paranoia when it comes to this sort of "being billed for an incoming call" idea. The only case I know of where this has been done is when someone posing to be a technician asks the person who answered to enter a conference call code and then hang up. Some systems will hold the conference open, thus allowing the incoming caller to make a long distance call. If you are still concerned, call your phone company and ask them if there is a charge on your account (and if there is, please come back and post the details here). ] U may consider Lifelock one of the best identity theft protection service.
